Mammography Procedures
"I’ve been coming to your office since I moved to the area for my annual mammography. Angel has always been so fun, positive, upbeat and caring. Angel didn’t have to do anything else but be herself before I was smiling and felt my body tension ease up. She really is an angel and such a breath of fresh air to what is otherwise not such a pleasant procedure. I’m grateful you have her working there, especially this year."

Mammography Procedure Types

Ultrasound Associates’ Women’s Imaging Center offers two distinct digital mammography exams. Both include the use of computer-aided-detection (CAD) which has been shown to improve the rate of early breast cancer detection.  The CAD software provides analysis of the breast image unique to the patient’s breast density and identifies areas of interest.  Click here for a detailed description of CAD.

Breast Biopsy’s is typically performed with ultrasound guidance when a suspicious breast mass is detected.

Screening Digital Mammography is performed routinely for women 35 years of age or older. This type of exam can detect lumps or tumors that cannot be felt. Click here for a detailed description.

Diagnostic Digital Mammography is performed when a breast lump or other abnormal symptoms have been found.

Breast Ultrasound is often performed to supplement a mammogram and provide additional images that aid in the diagnosis. A breast ultrasound is the preferred imaging for women who are breastfeeding, pregnant or under 30 years of age. Click here for a detailed description.

Breast Cyst Aspiration is typically performed with ultrasound guidance when a breast cyst becomes painful an aspiration is usually performed.

Breast Biopsy is typically performed with ultrasound guidance when a suspicious breast mass is detected. Click Here for a detailed description.

Mammography Exam Preparation

Please review our guidelines to prepare for a mammography appointment at Ultrasound Associates:

  • New patients should arrange to have  their film/images/CDs from the prior two years delivered or mailed to us at least two (2) weeks prior to your appointment.  CDs of your prior images are preferred.  The film or CDs will be returned to you for safekeeping on the day of your exam. Please use our Request to Release Health Information form to obtain your prior film/images/CDs.
  • Mammograms are best performed between days 1-14 of the menstrual cycle, when breasts are least dense.
  • If there is a chance you are pregnant, do not have a mammogram.
  • Do not use any deodorants, creams, lotions, powders or perfumes on the breast or underarm areas prior to the exam.
  • For your convenience, we recommend you wear a two-piece outfit since you will need to undress from the waist up. You will be given a gown to wear during the exam.
  • Do not bring unaccompanied children.  Children will not be permitted to accompany you into the mammography exam room suite due to safety regulations.
  • If you have breast implants, be sure to let us know when you schedule your appointment and again at the time of exam.
  • Please download and complete the required forms before arriving for your exam to minimize wait time.
