Protecting Your Privacy – Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996

On April 14, 2003, the Privacy Rule of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, (HIPAA) went into effect.  This HIPAA rule establishes a foundation of Federal protection for personal health information carefully balanced to avoid creating unnecessary barriers to the delivery of quality health care. The regulations provide patients with significant new rights regarding their patient information, and establish appropriate standards for healthcare providers regarding the use and disclosure of protected health information, whether communicated electronically, on paper or verbally.

The HIPAA Privacy Rule generally prohibits a covered entity from using or disclosing protected health information unless authorized by the patient, except where this prohibition would unnecessarily interfere with access to quality health care or the efficient payment for such services   The Privacy Rule does not require patient consent for the use and disclosure of protected health information for treatment, payment, and health care operations.  By contrast an “authorization” is required for use and disclosure of protected health information not otherwise allowed by the Rule.

Ultrasound Associates fully complies with the HIPAA Privacy Rules. A written “Notice of Privacy Practice” is available from our receptionist, and will be mailed upon request.  The policies as expressed in the Notice apply to all employees, departments, and business associates of Ultrasound Associates.  The Notice explains how patient health information is used consistent with the provisions of HIPAA, and patient rights regarding their medical information.  To request a copy of the Notice or for further information, please contact:
